I IS FOR INCHES NOT MILES

September 07, 2012

Change takes time.  Big change takes a lot of time.  And to truly change to habits that got you into your cluttered lifestyle, you have to know it is going to take time.  Not just a weekend like on "This Organizing Show" or over the course of a few weeks on "That Organizing Show."  Sometimes months.  Sometimes years.  Those TV shows do a fantastic job of showing you how nice your home could look without the clutter but there is very little time spent on evaluating and changing the behavior that started the clutter in the first place.  So when you embark on changing your clutter habits, know that your true change will come in baby steps.  Start with simple tasks like putting keys back on a key hook or sorting and shredding mail immediately each day.  As these newly established habits become second nature, add more tasks like putting laundry away immediately or making sure the counters are cleared every night before bed.  Rather than attempting a major behavioral overhaul overnight, start small.  Truly ingrain your news habits into your routine before adding new habits.  Before long, living an organized life will seem second nature.
