N IS FOR NOT TODAY

September 17, 2012

While my previous post was about "Maintenance", M very well could have also stood for "Motivation."  We all have A LOT going on, all of the time.  So how is it some people manage to stay on top of their homes, bills and storage and others do not.  I can't claim to have all the answers, but here are some motivational tips to help you tackle your clutter daily as opposed to letting it pile up beyond control:

  1. Do a little everyday.  Even if it's just 5 minutes.  Pick an area or task and devote some time to it every day.  Just like with weight loss, you're much more likely to stick with changes when you do a little each day than when you try to do it all at once.
  2. Get the others in your home on board with helping.  Have a family meeting and explain your plan of attack.  Whether it's discussing the bills with your partner or the home with your family or roommates, it's best to let everyone in on your plan and how they can (or are expected to) help.
  3. Remember, you don't have to devote a lot of time daily.  A little every day will lead to big results.  This comes in handy when you don't have any motivation after a long day.  Put the laundry away.  Unload the dishwasher.  Clear the counters.  Doing just 1 task today is 1 less task you have to do tomorrow.
