Low Cost Solutions

Getting organized doesn't have to cost a fortune.  Here are some tips that will cost around $10 (or less) and may even involve materials you already have lying around the house.

Use address labels or masking tape to keep track of which cord is which on your power strip. This is also a great way to label and keep track of random cords about your home such as phone chargers or camera and laptop cords. Bonus tip: use twist ties to keep excess length of cords neat and tidy.
Empty egg cartons are a great way to organize small objects in a drawer from binder clips and paper clips in the office to hair accessories in the bathroom or jewelry in the bedroom.
It's hard to part with magazines since we pay good money for them. But they do take up space, they're full of ads and often we forget to revisit them. Why not tear out the parts of the magazine you want to keep (recipes, travel info, ab exercises, etc) and place them in a 3 ring binder? One step better: use dividers to help you locate articles even faster.
Use these handy containers to save half used onions, tomatoes, lemons, limes or garlic. The ridges at the bottom of the container keep moisture away from the food to help keep it fresh longer. The colorful design helps you remember you have stored inside. And at about $4 each, they will pay for themselves in just a few saved onions (or tomatoes or lemons...)

Free up drawer space by hanging belts & accessories on handy hooks like these (about $3 each). Or make our free version which uses a wire hanger from the dry cleaner refashioned and covered in tape for stability (not quite as sturdy but it gets the job done!)

With winter on the way, this handy scarf hanger is a great way to store your favorite winter neck warmers and prevent tangles and snags. Available from The Container Store or Amazon.com for around $10.

Use empty toilet tissue tubes to tame the tangle of your extension cords or other wiley cords in a drawer.
Need more counter space?  Try hanging a collapsible dishrack on the inside of your cupboard door.

Tired of cord clutter?  Use a colorful teapot or vase to hide your chargers when not in use.   Just unplug and tuck inside.
