De-Clutter and Recycle

Since getting organized often involves discarding unused and unwanted items, I encourage clients to find these items a second home or new uses.  Here is a list of links to great resources if you are looking to give an old item a new life.  The list is ever expanding so check back often for updates:


HOME ITEMS

  • Cell Phones-Cell Phones for Soldiers collects old cell phones and uses the profits from recycling the parts to purchase calling cards for service men and women serving overseas. www.cellphonesforsoldiers.com
  • Cell Phones-Action Ohio collects old and unused cell phones to raise funds to serve domestic violence victims, survivors, victims' families and the professionals who serve them. www.actionohio.org/cellphone_collection.htm

  • Crayons-Send your broken, old and unused crayons here where they are melted down and given new life as new crayons.  Since crayons are made from petroleum they do not break down in landfills.  Over 57,000 of crayon waste saved to date.  www.crazycrayons.com

  • Athletic Shoes-The Nike Reuse a Shoe Project turns used athletic shoes into a material used in sports surfaces such as running tracks.  www.nikereuseashoe.com
  • Bridal Gowns-Brides Against Breast Cancer is a non-profit collects new and used dresses that they auction off around the country to raise funds Breast Cancer research.  www.bridesagainstbreastcancer.org
  • Professional Women's Clothing-Dress for Success is a non-profit that collects gently used women's professional clothing to help women on their way to a new career path.  www.dressforsuccess.org
  • Shoes-Soles for Soles is a non-profit collecting gently used footwear.  Donated shoes are distributed worldwide to the nearly 300 million children and 1.5 billion adults worldwide without shoes.  www.soles4souls.org
  • Wool Sweaters-Donate your old, worn wool sweaters and they will be made into mittens to raise money for cancer research.  www.gratefulheartdesign.com
SHARING NETWORKS
  • Neighborgoods-Say you have a waffle iron or ice cream maker that your not ready to part with or you need a carpet cleaner because yours died...try neighborgoods.net!  Neighborgoods links you up with people in your neighborhood who may have something you need to borrow or want to borrow something from you.  www.neighborgoods.net
  • Freecycle-If you have stuff to get rid of that you just want to disappear, try posting it on freecycle.org.  www.freecycle.org
  • The ReUseIt Network-An on-line forum that serves as a tool to make connections between community members who want to help each other, themselves, and their environment.  www.reuseitnetwork.org
